Guardian Angel Gift Letter

Union Hospital Foundation's new Guardian Angel Program allows individuals the opportunity to honor a Union Hospital caregiver who went above and beyond the call of duty.

Below is an excerpt from a Guardian Angel letter that we recently received from Union Hospital employee and patient, Linda Sturtevant. Mrs. Sturtevant made gifts in honor of five Union Hospital employees:

Michelle Shackleford, ECA Emergency Dept.

Michelle responded quickly and professionally when I called for a nurse because a woman who had just entered the ER waiting area passed out and fell to the floor just a few steps from where I was standing. Michelle gave the initial care until a stretcher could be brought in to carry the patient into the ER for full medical care. [On a separate occasion] I observed Michelle performing additional duties. [She] did the extra work with balance, professionalism and an even temperament. She was cheerful and courteous to patients, family members and other staff. She also had an extra responsibility during this time of monitoring a new teen volunteer for a couple of hours. When Michelle is on duty one has confidence that things will go as smoothly as possible.

Neva McFarland, Chaplain's Office Coordinator & Carol Stidman, Patient Representative

Neva and Carol cared for the family of a man who died in the ER as a result of a motor vehicle accident. His 18 year old daughter had been driving when the accident ocurred. She was distraught and her mother was stunned. Neva came back to work to assist Carol with the family's needs. She worked with the wife to contact Ft Wayne relatives to come get the two women while Carol consoled the daughter who was grief-stricken.

Dr. Douglas Claybrook

Dr. Claybrook has cared for my husband and myself for over twenty years. We have both had procedures in the hospital in the past year that required his professional surgical expertise and on-going care. Because of Dr. Claybrook we have had a better quality of life.

Dr. Ravi Koduru

Dr. Koduru is a true guardian angel who monitors my health and keeps me in the best possible condition considering my age and sometimes not-so-wise choices.

I appreciate your awarding the Guardian Angel pins to the above competent professionals who make Union Hospital the place where compassionate medical and supportive care is given daily, no matter what the circumstances may be. It is truly a pleasure to work with and be cared for by these men and women.

Sincerely,

Linda Sturtevant

Frances “Fran” Cole was born and raised in Terre Haute, Indiana. As a young child she recalls visiting her father’s automobile dealership downtown at 6th and Walnut and frequent trips to Union Hospital with her mother, Anne Kidder Cole, who was on the hospital’s board of directors. Because of her mother’s longtime ties to Union, Fran notes that it was a natural decision for her to join the hospital’s board after she, herself, was grown and married to prominent local businessman, Robert Westrup.

The Tribune Star

Published: December 24, 2009 by Sue Loughlin

Sixty-five-year-old Alice Daves doesn’t have any kids of her own, but earlier this year, she spent hundreds of hours in a labor of love to benefit children who are hospitalized.

Daves, a Union Hospital volunteer, decided to hand-crochet 1,000 small “caring crosses” to support the hospital’s pediatrics and neonatal intensive care units. Each cross took about 30 minutes to make, which means the project took her about 500 hours over six months.

"Distinctive Past...Exceptional Future" Capital Campaign Donor List

10/06/2009

Union Hospital is in the midst of a $185 million addition, the largest construction effort in Terre Haute's history. The project was made feasible through the combination of bond financing, available hospital reserves, and gifts secured through the hospital's first major philanthropic campaign in decades: "Distinctive Past...Exceptional Future" [capital campaign].

To date, the Capital Campaign has collected over $8.2 million from nearly 1,200 donors and the campaign will continue as the Foundation is still having talks with a number of prospective donors.

Union Hospital Foundation would like to proudly recognize all of the generous donors who have invested in this project. Click "read more" below to see a complete list of donors.
