Success Stories
In April of 2002 after three surgeries to remove cancer from my left
breast, I began my radiation treatment at the Hux Cancer Center at Union
Hospital.
From the first day at the Hux Center when I received my "tattoo", the
precise measurement to mark the cancerous area to be treated, I felt
empowered. Dr. Robert Haerr met with me to discuss all of my treatment
options and carefully explained the radiation treatment regiment. That
same day I also had the opportunity to meet with the nutritionist to
discuss how to adjust my diet to maximize my strength and immune system
during my treatment. Not only did the staff extend their care and
concern, they reassured me as I asked numerous questions about the
procedure.
I began a series of 30 treatments knowing that this was an essential
part of my treatment to keep the cancer from spreading or returning. As
I look back I remember going to the Hux Center each day, being greeted
by my first name, scanning my card to identify that I had arrived. The
staff put me at ease during the treatments and as I began to experience
fatigue and some soreness going in to my third week. The very last
treatment was a triumphant day for me. After I finished the final
treatment I looked at the smiling faces of all of the staff as they
handed me a single rose to signify my completion.
Now it is August 2008. I am cancer free. I am a survivor; thanks in
part to the Hux Cancer Center.
