Children's Classic Run Benefiting Pediatric Therapy - Saturday, September 25, 2010 - Terre Haute Street Fair (Downtown)

Children, kindergarten through eighth grade, will participate in the 2010 Children's Classic Run which benefits the Pediatric Therapy Unit. For the second year the run will be conducted in collaboration with the Terre Haute Street Fair in downtown Terre Haute.

The young patients of the Pediatric Therapy Unit receive therapy for conditions such as cerebral palsy and Down Syndrome to help them reach their full potential. Many of the children can receive only limited therapy sessions through their families' insurance or through Medicaid. The funds provided through the Children's Classic enable these boys and girls to receive therapy as soon as they need it and to receive all of the therapy sessions each child can benefit from.

Union Hospital Foundation Packing Four Fundraisers Into September

TERRE HAUTE — What do you get when adding shotguns, volleyball, motorcycles and joggers together?

A very busy month for the Union Hospital Foundation.

“It’s just called coincidence,” foundation director Jim Bertoli said of September’s jam-packed fundraising line-up. Some people have called him crazy for organizing into one month this year’s Volleyball for the Small, Children’s Classic Run, the Eagle Riders Mammogram Assistance Ride and a Sporting Clay Classic.

“And I’m not disputing that,” he joked. “But you do it because it’s the right thing to do.”

Last year’s inaugural Volleyball for the Small and the annual Children’s Classic Run just happened to be in the same month, and the Eagle Riders motorcycle ride for charity is a Labor Day weekend event. This year, the addition of a sporting clay shoot capped off the month, providing something for everyone, regardless of age or field of interest.

Nationally, charitable giving is down as the grip of a disastrous economy tightens people’s wallets, but Bertoli said he and others are continually surprised at the giving nature of the Wabash Valley. “I think all of the events are going to be a big success,” he said.

Guardian Angels Take Flight

Tribune Star's September-October 2010 Edition of Valley Health

Many in the community knew Jerry Einstandig as a great community leader, a friendly face, and a generous giver. For these reasons and more he was the perfect selection as the Chairman of the largest capital campaign that Union Hospital has ever conducted, to fund the largest construction project that Terre Haute has ever undergone.

He led the Foundation through the “Distinctive Past…Exceptional Future” campaign in some of the toughest economic times in recent history and succeeded despite those challenges. Less than two years after the campaign began, Jerry stood at a podium in the newly constructed Union Hospital East to address the community and announce that the Foundation had exceeded its $8 million goal by almost $1 million. The success of the campaign was a testament to his volunteer efforts, but Jerry would be the last to admit that.

Just three months after he spoke at the open house, Jerry found himself again entering the hospital that he helped build, but this time as a patient. While Jerry and his wife Jo had always been believers in the quality care that Union provides, they would soon come to know of it firsthand.
