Scholarship Information
Because of gifts from generous donors, Union Hospital Foundation is able to present nearly $40,000 in scholarships on an annual basis. While some scholarships are open to all community members meeting the eligibility requirements, others are available only to Union Hospital/Union Hospital Clinton/Hospice of the Wabash Valley employees and their children. See below for eligibility, requirements, and information on how to apply.

Scholarship Eligibility
To be eligible for a Union Hospital Foundation Scholarship an applicant must:
- Be a resident of the Wabash Valley, limited to Clay, Greene, Parke, Sullivan, Vermillion and Vigo counties in Indiana and Clay, Crawford, Edgar and counties in Illinois unless otherwise noted under specific scholarship criteria.
- Be enrolled in or accepted into an accredited degree program at a college or university (if applying for a health careers scholarship)
- Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, if the applicant has completed one or more semesters of school at a college or university (unless otherwise noted)
- Demonstrate financial need
- Most scholarships also require the recipient to be a U.S. citizen
- Unless otherwise noted, scholarship awards can be used only for the expenses of the tuition in two installments.
Requirements of Scholarship Recipients
A recipient of a Union Hospital Foundation scholarship must fulfill the following requirements during the academic year for which the student receives the scholarship:
- Remain enrolled in an accredited degree program (If a health careers scholarship was awarded)
- Maintain the status of a full-time student, minimum of 12 credit hours per semester or the equivalent
- Maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or the equivalent

Available Scholarships
Determination of quantity and amount of scholarships granted is made on a year by year basis.
Health Careers
Students applying for health careers scholarships are required to be enrolled in a healthcare degree program to be considered.
The Burnita Laybold Hershfield Nursing Scholarship
Must be
- A current Union Hospital employee (full-time or part-time)
- Pursuing an advanced degree (masters or doctorate) in nursing at Indiana State University with a desire to practice in the Wabash Valley
- Be a resident of the Wabash Valley, limited to Clay, Greene, Parke, Putnam, Sullivan, Vermillion and Vigo counties in Indiana and Clark, Crawford, Edgar and Lawrence counties in Illinois
The Mary Joan & Thomas Conway Scholarship for Health Careers *
Must be:
- Be a resident of the Wabash Valley, limited to Clay, Parke, Sullivan, Vermillion and Vigo counties in Indiana and Clay, Crawford, Edgar and Lawrence counties in Illinois and currently employed in nursing or related health care discipline (employees of Union Hospital, Hospice and Visiting Nurse of the Wabash Valley, Comfort Keepers and Union Associated Physicians Clinic receive first consideration.)
- Pursuing a degree in Nursing, Physical Therapy or related health care discipline
- Maintaining a minimum of 3 credit hours per semester (graduate) or 12 credit hours per semester (undergraduate), or the equivalent.
- *Conway scholarship may also be used for the purpose of a living expense stipend
The Dr. C.N. Combs Memorial Nursing Scholarship
Must be:
- An Indiana State University student pursuing a registered nursing degree
The Wanita I. & Ernest E. Hinshaw Nursing Education Fund
Must be:
- Pursuing an advanced nursing degree or registered nursing degree from an accredited nursing education program
The Gertrude and Ralph Horton Grants-in-Aid for Nursing Education
Must be:
- Pursuing a registered nursing degree from an accredited nursing education program
- An unmarried female
The Mary Kay Holvey-Aust Nursing Scholarship (Not offered this academic year )
Must be:
- An Indiana State University student pursuing a registered nursing degree
- Female
The Gladys N. Marvel, R.N. and Cecil B. Marvel Memorial Nursing Scholarship
Must be:
- Pursuing an advanced nursing degree or registered nursing degree from an accredited nursing education program
The Amanda Pugh Memorial Nursing Scholarship
Must be:
- An Indiana State University student pursuing a registered nursing degree (Preference is given to West Vigo High School graduates)
The Michele Pantle Memorial Nursing Scholarship
Must be:
- A working parent going back to school to pursue a degree in nursing from any school that uses Union Hospital as a clinical site (Indiana State University, Ivy-Tech Community College, Lincoln Trail College, Lake Land Community College, Lakeview College of Nursing or Indiana Wesleyan University.)
The John C. and Jennie Figg Health Careers Scholarship
Must be:
- Pursuing a health career degree from an accredited education program
The Eleanor N. Royse Health Careers Scholarship
Must be:
- Pursuing a health career degree from an accredited education program
The Century Club Health Careers Scholarship
Must be:
- Pursuing a health career degree from an accredited education program
The Frank & Linda Shelton Scholarship
Must be:
- A Union Hospital/Union Hospital Clinton employee, or the child of an employee, who meets at least ONE of the following:
1. Pursuing a masters degree in health care administration at an accredited program
2. Enrolled in the B.A./M.D. program at Indiana State University
3. Enrolled in the Family Nurse Practitioner program at Indiana State University
Donna Hux Scholarship for Hospice
Must be:
- An employee of Hospice of the Wabash Valley or Visiting Nurse Association or the child of a Hospice employee pursuing further education in a qualified field of health care
OPEN MAJOR
The Union Hospital Foundation Academic Scholarships
Must be:
- A Union Hospital/Union Hospital Clinton employee or their child -OR- a student enrolled in the health careers program through Vigo County School Corporation
- Entering college in the fall of the year for which the award is given
The Brandon Bickers Memorial Scholarship For Student Athletes
Must:
- Be a current Wabash Valley high school student who participated in interscholastic athletics (high school located in Vigo County or one of the surrounding counties including Sullivan, Clay, Parke and Vermillion counties in Indiana and Clark or Edgar counties in Illinois)
- Be entering a college or university in the fall of the current year
- Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale
